Having an awkward moment? What should I do?

I would just say hi and ask what's up with him, how's his life, etc. etc. I don't know why you would feel awkward writing to him, but that's what I would say to start a mail conversation (or Facebook). I don't know if this is the answer you are looking for, but your situation was very complicated...
