How can i make the pole downstairs a little less rusty?

i have no pole at home to practice pole dancing on, so someone suggested using the basement poles, and i thought that was a good idea. the only thing was that they are kind of rusty and dirty. how can i clean up all the rustiness off the poles in the basement?
