I need router help please?

Okay so I rent the downstairs of a house and we share a router for Internet. The router is upstairs and I don't have access to it and it is always breaking so I went to buy a new router and I read the directions for it and it said I need to connect it to a modem? Is there anyway I can make it work without connection it to a modem?
